I used Star Server for 1 year. In the hope that it will be useful for those who are looking for a reputation, I will tell you about the usability (and specifically the cons) of my personal Star Server.

What is a Star Server?
Star Server is known as a "cheap rental server recommended for beginners" operated by Netowl Co., Ltd.
Netowl Co., Ltd. has been developing Internet-related services since 2009, so it is not a very new service.
The star server itself seems to have been available on August 7, 2017.
I first used Star Server in January 2023. After using it, there were some parts that honestly made me think, "This is a pity."
I have no intention of continuing to use it in the future, and I plan to cancel it. I have already paid for 3 years, so I plan to cancel after 3 years.
Star servers also have several features.
Features of Star Server
Basic functions are complete
As long as you run a website, it will work just fine.
If the site is created by an individual with HTML and CSS, it will work with any plan.
However, I would like to tell beginners who are considering which rental server to use, basically most rental servers support it if you are running a decent site.
Star Server also adopts all-SSD, PHP acceleration settings, etc., and other measures are in place to increase the display speed of the site.
Can be used from 220 yen per month
Star servers are cheap. You can use it from 138 yen per month.
… That? The headline above says 220 yen per month...
This is actually a trap. Star Server has the cheapest plan called the Economy Plan.
However, with this plan, you can only operate the minimum site.It doesn't come with the easy installation feature of WordPress. I can't use MySQL either.
Therefore, I treat the economy plan as if there is no one. Considering that, you will probably use the light plan for 220 yen per month.
Still, it doesn't make a difference that it's cheaper.
Star Server Reputation
If you have read the article so far, you may have a faint idea,I personally don't recommend Star Server very much.
The reasons for this will be explained later.
The reputation on X (formerly Twitter) is as follows.
- Not connected, disabled
- It's too much to get a domain for free.
- Adult content (adult) cannot be used
- Star server is good for creating a simple site, right?
We have checked almost all of the posts so far as of August 2024. It is divided into the above reputations. In particular, about 60% of the voices say that the star server fails and cannot be connected.
In fact, from the perspective of low prices, it is popular with beginners who want to get started easily.
Disadvantages & disadvantages of star servers
From here, the disadvantages are the disadvantages that I have actually felt after using Star Server for one year.
Unable to configure DKIM, DMARC, SPF, etc.
This is the reason why I strongly wanted to cancel the Star Server in March 2024.
What is this DKIM, in a nutshell"Important settings to properly deliver emails to the other party"is.
To send emails to Google, Yahoo, etc., you need to support sending domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).
Roughly speaking, these are measures to prevent spoofing and phishing scams.
If you do not set this authentication setting, the email you send will be sent to the other party's spam folder. Even if you send an email to Gmail, it will not arrive properly. It's the worst, isn't it?
It is unclear whether it is currently supported. It was not available in March.
By the way, all the rental servers I use elsewhere support these sending domain authentications. The only thing that didn't support it was the star server.
Lack of support
Also, basically there is a lack of manual and support for Star Server. There is no phone support, only email support.
And above all,There is a clear lack of manuals and materials.
There is a manual page itself.
However, it is undeniable that it is thin compared to other rental servers. It's a shame that even if you look up what you want to know, you won't get a hit.
Regarding the sending domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) issues that occurred above, I searched and could not find a way to configure them on the star server.
I found a bulletin board where users can interact with each other, but I can't find an answer in the official manual at all.
No automatic backups
Also, Star Server does not have an automatic backup function.
Therefore, you need to back it up yourself. If your site has a fatal problem, if you don't have a backup, you're done.
The manual explains how to take a manual backup, but it is clearly not beginner-friendly.
Is Star Server recommended?
Nope. Personally, I didn't like the star server. Therefore, I do not recommend it.
However, this is just my personal opinion. I don't have a grudge against Net Owl Co., Ltd. or Star Server, and I can't help but feel sorry that if the service is simply improved, it will be easier to use.
It is a service that can be used at a particularly low price. If you choose by cheapness, it's an ant.
SimplyI would like to recommend another server for the main site operation.
In addition to this, there were some small stresses, such as not being able to set up the email used on the star server on another company's domain.
As a user who has been using it for one year, I can't recommend it at this time.
Who is Star Server recommended for?
Wouldn't it be nice if you run a website or blog for hobby purposes?
The price is also cheap. It is a great advantage to be able to use WordPress from the 220 yen plan.
If you only look at cheapness, a star server might be a good choice.
On the other hand, I felt that the service was quite thin for commercial use by companies and businesses. In fact, I have used most of the domestic rental servers, but they are difficult to use.
What are the recommended domestic rental servers?
You can choose as many rental servers as you want in Japan. In other words, there is no problem if you use a service that is well-known.
There are often articles that say, "This rental server is recommended for site management!" To be honest, unless it's a very heavy site, you can operate any rental server in Japan.
All rental servers have high performance, to the extent that you might think, "Do you need that many specs?" As long as it is not a very low spec, it doesn't matter which rental server you use.
I recommend Shin Rental Server
By the way, I am currently using a thin rental server. The management screen is easy to see, and various settings can be easily made.
It's just a little more expensive than the star server, but if you ask me, "Which one do you recommend?"Shin Rental ServerI recommend it.
